Sisterly Love

My sister Kelsey is addicted to salt

I mean to the point where my mom had to buy her own salt shaker because the one in the kitchen would show up "missing." Kelsey's favorite snack?: the pretzel salt at the bottom of the bag. She can't even wait until all the pretzels are gone! Her grubby little mits work their way down into the bottom of the bag (usually splitting the bag down the middle) to get her hands on it.

One day, about 30 minutes before mom was due home from work, Kelsey ripped the pretzel bag right down the middle causing the salt to shower all over the floor and couch cover. "DAMN IT!" In a frenzy to clean before mom came home (because she knows she'll get in trouble for eating so much salt) Kelsey gets the vacuum cleaner and goes to town on the couch cover.

All the sudden I heard a noise like the vacuum was clogged, and sure enough, the couch cover was getting sucked right into the vacuum. Understandably, Kelsey pulls the cover out of the vacuum hole and... POP! Like a little trampoline, the cover bounces and sends all the pretzel salt right into Kelsey's face (even worse, in her eyes!).

In a frantic panic, Kelsey starts running around the living room screaming and pulling her eyelids, screaming "IT BURNS!!! THE SALT!" I could literally see the salt crystals dissolving on her poor eyes.

It may seem cruel, but this was by far the funniest chain of events I had ever seen.. I still can't think about it without laughing.. and that day, like a cruel big sister, I was on the floor basically crying because I couldn't contain myself.

I will never look at salt the same.

I miss you girls :(

It Feels Like Home to Me

What does home feel like to you?

Home = my bed. You may think this is laziness, but fear not, sleeping is my favorite hobby. I am damn good at it.
After a long hard day, or a booze filled night, nothing sounds better to me than staying in bed all day. Whether that means painting in bed, eating in bed, or just watching tacky Lifetime movies all day in bed.

I think that a person's bedroom is a looking glass to the soul. The rest of the house is common decor suitable for guests, but the bedroom.. free reign. I love decorating and playing with color, so moving into my new room is exciting for me. I was on the hunt for the perfect comforter, and I found it, at Anthrolopolie. I spent some dough on it, but my excuse?

My bed = home.

Founding Farmers

Well this time, we lucked out. Founding Farmers is a restaurant that prides themselves on being environmentally friendly and farm fresh. After sifting through 2 huge pages of extremely appetizing choices (an indecisive person's nightmare) I finally chose fish and chips. YUM! They were the best fish and chips I've ever had! The "green" atmosphere and delicious food was enough to satisfy me. I can't wait to bring you guys here when you come visit :)

This weekend, some friends from college were in town and staying near Dupont Circle in D.C. After a fun and booze filled night Friday, we were on the hunt for a hangover cure Saturday. I used my Yelp app on my phone to find the nearest restaurant and Founding Farmers was the closest. Due to the 103ยบ weather we were facing, we didn't care where we ate, as long as it was close.

"N as in Nazi"

I got a phone call requesting an email address for a colleague and when he repeated it back to me he said:
"E as in Elephant, U as in Umbrella, N as in Nazi"
...really?! Is "N for Nazi" the first thing that comes to mind? Geesh I could barely contain myself.

POP!

I asked for a pop the other day and everyone looked at me like I was a weirdo.

Note to self: they say SODA here....

3x5 John Mayer

I'm writing you to
catch you up on places I've been
And you have this letter
you probably got excited, but there's nothing else inside it
didn't have a camera by my side this time
hoping I would see the world through both my eyes
maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way with words
Today skies are painted colors of a cowboy cliche'
And its strange how clouds that look like mountains in the sky
are next to mountains anyway

Didn't have a camera by my side this time
Hoping I would see the world through both my eyes
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way
but let me say
You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside

No more 3x5's
I Guess you had to be there
I Guess you had to be with me

Today I finally overcame
tryin' to fit the world inside a picture frame
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm in the mood to
lose my way but let me say
You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside
no more 3x5's
just no more 3x5's

I Like to Ramble..

So it's Friday (TGIF!) and I'm bored...

Tommy is moving here today, and my friends from school, Rohan and Ben are coming in town for the night. A little taste of home never hurt anyone :)

Now that I have a full time job, I have been thinking a lot about how people raise families and work full time. I get up at 7:40 leave the house at 8:40 and get to work at 9:30. When I get off at 5:30, it takes me about an hour to get home. So I finally walk in the door at 6:30, then what? Dinner, laundry, sit down for ten minutes, bed.

How do you people do it?! How do you fit a baby in there? or even worse, a bratty teenager! Everyday I become more appreciative of the things my mom did for me growing up (like when I moved into my first house at school and called her crying because I "appreciated her"), and this is just another way of me saying,

Mom, I appreciate you and all you do

Boss Man has his little girls in the office this morning and the little baby boinked her head right into the glass door! So cute.... Ohhh so that's why you people do it..

suddenly it all makes sense ;) I guess a little boink here and there is worth it.

Brown-eyed Blues

I think it's fair to say that I have been through several significant live changes over the past month.

Not only am I dealing with separation from my college life in Athens, but also my family and best friends in Ohio. I am also struggling through a falling out with what I thought was a life-long friend, and a 10 hour separation from my boyfriend.

With that, I feel like a nomad drifting from place to place. When I'm able to move into my house on August 1st, with three other people I have met once, I will have moved 5 times in 30 days.

Needless to say, I'm having a brown-eyed blues kinda day and I miss and love you all.

What Do You Want??!

As I was walking to work today I looked up to find this guy hanging out the drivers window staring at me and then he gave me a wave like, "hey gurllll."

This isn't the first time that a creepy man, with no teeth, smiled and waved at me, I seem to attract these sort of men like flies on poop. But I started thinking... WHY? Why do you stare and wave and make yourself known to me? Do you think I'm going to run down your car and jump into your arms (or probably by the looks of you, you wish your back seat?). Do you think I'm going to jump for joy and then give you my number from across the street using sign language?

Honestly, when will I EVER see you again? Never.
Dayton? Maybe I would run into by some freak accident, but in D.C? Not a chance.

Congratulations, you're a creep.

Illegal Aliens??!!

A call I answered today and the "conversation" that followed:

Woman: Hi, so I need help cuz' there are these illegal aliens that are going around stealing social security numbers and they got a hold of my husbands and BOUGHT A HOUSE WIF IT! Now, we have these illegal aliens corruptin' my mortgage and the government just lets them live there! We can't keep lettin' these mortgages go crazy... ya know what I mean?!

at that moment she took her first breath and I barely had enough time to say

Me: Sorry, wrong number.

A day in the life of a receptionist

YUM!

Next week, Georgetown Cupcakes in D.C. is starting a show on TLC called D.C. Cupcakes! Since I work in Georgetown, it only seemed fair that I wait in line to see what these $3 cupcakes were all about.
I picked the first cupcake that stood out to me: Lemon Berry :) I cannot imagine working in that small of a space with video cameras in my face. It would be enough to throw me over the edge, but I think they'll survive with the sweet smell of heavenly cupcakes lingering the background. I carefully wrapped my beautifully delicate cupcake in parchment paper and headed back to the office. If I was going to enjoy this cupcake, it wasn't going to be under my umbrella in the rain...

My cupcake was a little melted but it survived and was delicious!

Where Was Matthew McConaughey??

Screen on the Green is an outdoor movie night featured in 11 locations around D.C.
The location that I was invited to was conveniently placed between the Washington Monument and the Capital Building. I stepped off the metro at the Smithsonian station unaware that the famous monuments I had only seen pictures of, would be the backdrop to the huge screening of Goldfinger.
It was a perfect setting and I was almost expecting Matthew McConaughey to whip around the corner and sweep me off my feet with his brown colored M&M's ("because they're the only ones with no artificial coloring").
30 minutes into the movie and about three hours into cheese and wine time (note to self: bring more wine) it started to pour! I actually didn't mind... I loved watching adults run through puddles and splash around like kids again.

It was an unexpected end to a great night :)

Friendship

How would you define friendship?

We all have different friends that each have their own type of relationship; whether that be your drinking buddy, the person you vent to, the person you call when you want to be right, or the person you call when you know you're wrong. No matter what relationship I have with my friends, I've always said that:

"Friends are the family you choose for yourself"

A recent change of events has made me take a step back and really analyze what friendship means to me. I think that friendship is selfless - even if that means ditching a hot date for a night full of tear filled tissues and tubs of ice cream. It means listening and offering advice when granted. It means forgiveness in times of weakness, because no one is perfect and friends should be there to help you pick up the pieces when your foundation seems to be crumbling. True friends don't abandon you in a time of transition.

Dictionary.com defines a Friend as: A person with whom one is allied
in a struggle or cause; a comrade.
